Cardiovascular fellowship program
The Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center is committed to providing the necessary instruction, educational structure, patient material and support to develop exceptionally trained cardiologists. Success stems from two factors: individual attention for each fellow and a wealth of clinical experience. This 517-bed acute care hospital combines the clinical diversity of a teaching hospital and the personal attention of a community institution. It is centrally located on the north side of Chicago and has a well-developed referral network, which attracts patients from the tri-state area.
As an ACGME-accredited fellowship program, we will pursue the resources, educational tools, and practices necessary to train our fellows to be well-rounded cardiologists. This includes achievement in all six of the ACGME core competencies as outlined by the ACGME Program Requirements for Graduate Medical Education in Cardiovascular Disease.
Our ACGME-accredited three-year program provides intensive exposure to all areas of the specialty for our nine fellows in the program.
Our strengths include:
- A highly dedicated core of teaching attendings, all well versed in the latest techniques in their fields.
- A high 'Teacher: to Fellow' ratio, allowing continual one-on-one instruction.
- Outstanding patient material derived from our diverse socio-economic and ethnic area allowing fellows to study the full spectrum of cardiovascular disorders.
- The flexibility to tailor much of the training to the interests and skills of the fellows.
- Cardiologists dedicated to keeping their section on the leading edge of the field. Fellows gain experience with the latest technology, including transcatheter ablation, atherectomy, balloon valvuloplasty, coronary stenting, multi-plane transesophageal echo, stress echocardiography, and intravascular ultrasound
- An additional, on-site Electrophysiology Fellowship Program that works concomitantly with the Cardiology Fellowship Program and enhances the electrophysiology training of the cardiology fellows.
- A very competitive Internal Medicine Residency Program
Graduates from our program often continue their education in sub-subspecialties of Electrophysiology, Heart Failure, Interventional Cardiology, etc. Some of these fellows have gone on to prestigious institutions such as Bay State, Northwestern University, and other equally competitive programs. Some fellows chose to start private practice, often staying in the Chicago area.
