Types of prostate cancer treatments we offer

Several factors influence the decision of how to treat your prostate cancer, including age, stage of the disease and your personal preferences.

Early-stage prostate cancer

When prostate cancer is found early, it’s usually treated aggressively. Surgery may be recommended, often supplemented by radiation therapy or hormone therapy. A prostatectomy – a surgical procedure that removes all or part of the prostate – is the primary treatment for mostly younger men and many older men with early-stage prostate cancer. At Advocate, our urologists are among the most experienced in Chicagoland in performing da Vinci robotic prostatectomy.

Advanced-stage prostate cancer

When found in its advanced stages, prostate cancer is usually treated with a combination of treatments – such as chemotherapy and immunotherapy – and surgery. The prostate's close proximity to the urethra and genitals makes surgery complicated, as we want to avoid damage to these other organs that can cause incontinence and impotence. Urologists choose from several cancer surgery techniques to remove the tumor and some of the surrounding tissue.
