Level I Trauma Center
One of only five Level I Trauma Centers in Chicago, we are recognized as a leader in providing the highest level of care for critically ill and injured patients. Our board-certified surgeons, who have specialty training in critical care medicine, consult with orthopedic, neurosurgical/spinal and perinatal specialists when caring for trauma patients.Emergency Operations Center
Our emergency physicians, nurses and staff have special training and expertise not only to care for individuals in our community but to coordinate complex treatment for the City of Chicago and beyond:- Designated by local and national agencies to lead the Chicago area medical response in the event of a city, state or national disaster
- Resource hospital for Chicago’s Emergency Medical Services, providing medical control for daily ambulance transport and oversight for the quality of care
- Oversight of paramedic support for Chicago special events, such as marathons and music festivals
Specialty care at our Chicago emergency room
Our board-certified emergency physicians serve as faculty for the University of Illinois Emergency Medicine Residency program, and neurosurgeons, neonatologists and pediatric and other specialists play a key role in our specialty care.In addition to board-certified doctors and surgeons, we offer a number of specialized services not typically found in emergency departments including:
- Licensed social workers to help patients and their families cope with the emotional aspects of illness and injury.
- Behavioral health specialists and crisis intervention counselors.
- Sexual assault nurse examiners specially trained to provide compassionate care, collect forensic evidence, counsel victims and testify in court and guide/support victims through the entire process.
- On-call dentists around-the-clock, to assist patients with injuries that involve the teeth and gums.
- Multilingual staff care for the diverse communities we serve in our Chicago emergency room.
Pediatric emergency care
We're recognized by the Illinois Department of Public Health as an Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics (EDAP). So we specially train staff to care for children using pediatric equipment and guidelines for child-appropriate medications in our Emergency Room. Chicago residents benefit from:
- 24-hour in-house pediatric physicians
- An Inpatient Pediatric Unit for children in need of longer-term care
- Access to Child Life therapists, who provide emotional and physical support for infants through teens and their families during hospital stays

Did you know that wearing a bike helmet can reduce your risk of brain injury by 88 percent in the event of an accident? To help keep the community safe, the Emergency Department at Advocate Illinois Masonic has partnered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on a helmet distribution program that promotes head injury awareness and bicycle safety. We have distributed more than 300 helmets to patients and associates.Safety in extreme temperatures
