Know where to goAdvocate Lutheran General Hospital (ALGH) is an Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) designated Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Resource Hospital. ALGH EMS System provides high quality EMS education and emergency medical services to the community.
The ALGH EMS System includes eight prehospital providers with over 400 EMS-licensed personnel (EMT and Paramedic) transporting more than 14,000 patients each year. ALGH EMS System also includes two emergency dispatch agencies with over 55 IDPH-licensed emergency medical dispatchers.

EMS education – Paramedic Program
The Advocate Lutheran General Hospital Paramedic Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).

The 10-month program is offered annually from August through June and has a reputation for producing advanced level paramedics. Our skilled faculty and staff provide the cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains necessary to produce high quality prehospital health care providers.
Our affiliation with Oakton College provides students with college credit, educational tracks and degree possibilities. Counseling and financial aid are also available through the college. Applications traditionally become available in November and can be found on the Oakton College website under Fire Science or by emailing our EMS System office at jennifer.kus@aah.org. Applications are due in March for a fall semester start date.
The program is based upon the National Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) EMS Education Standards and National Association of State EMS Officials (NASEMSO) National EMS Scope of Practice Model.
Additional paramedic program details
- Smaller class sizes.
- Classes are held at Oakton College Campus in Skokie and Lutheran General Hospital.
- Class meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
- Program consists of didactic and clinical hours, concluding with a field internship hosted by an ALGH EMS System provider with an approved preceptor.
- Program requires clinicals to be completed on some nonclass days.
- Unique clinical opportunities at Lutheran General Hospital and Resurrection Medical Center.
- Training enhanced with regularly scheduled SIM Man Training for high-impact, low-frequency clinical scenarios.
- Students graduate with certifications in:
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS)
- Geriatric Education for EMS (GEMS)
EMS education – EMT to Paramedic Bridge Seminar
The Bridge Seminar is a 16-hour evening seminar over the course of four days designed to bridge the gap between EMT and Paramedic Programs. The goal is to prepare students for success in preparing for enrollment to a Paramedic Program. This informal seminar is aimed to motivate and excite students interested in the EMS field with lectures, hands-on learning and interactive discussions.
Seminar content includes:
- BLS review
- Anatomy and physiology/body systems
- Cardiac
- Common diseases/conditions and associated pathophysiology
- Pharmacology
- Paramedic entrance exam review
