When to use telehealth

You wake up with a sore throat. You’re sneezing a lot and feeling kind of achy. You might think to yourself: Maybe it’s allergies or the start of a cold or the flu.
For many minor illnesses and injuries, you can get the same level of care with a telehealth visit as you would with in-person care at a clinic or your doctor’s office. Instead, you can just hop on your phone, tablet or computer to receive a diagnosis and treatment plan from a virtual care provider.
Whether you opt for a video visit or an e-visit, they’re both convenient ways you can get help for minor illnesses from wherever you are. Here’s a look at some of the conditions covered in video visits and e-visits.

Pairing video visits with your provider and in-person visits can help you monitor your health if you’re managing a chronic disease. You also might be able to get virtual care from your provider when you’re not feeling well. Check with your provider’s office to see if a telehealth visit is right for your situation.

With telehealth visits, you or child can get care without leaving home or sitting in a busy waiting room. You can hop on a call whenever it’s convenient for you whether that’s during your lunch break or in the evening after the kids go to bed. It’s also a convenient option to get care outside of your provider’s office hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
Of course, not every visit can be virtual. If you’re experiencing severe symptoms like difficulty breathing, seek in-person emergency care immediately or call 911.
Telehealth is a convenient option when your child gets sick, especially when you have other children. The idea of getting everyone into the car and off to the doctor’s office might seem overwhelming and time-consuming.
Or if your little one gets sick during the night, you don’t need to wait for answers until the doctor’s office opens in the morning.
Instead, you can request a video visit for kids ages 2-17 if you’re their legally authorized representative. Be sure the child is present and visible with you for the duration of the appointment.
You can also use Symptom Checker and submit an e-visit for kids ages 2-11 if you're their legally authorized representative and an e-visit is offered.
Since kids younger than 2 still need to be seen by their own provider, it’s best to call the office about scheduling a video visit or in-person appointment instead.
You might be wondering who’s on the other side of a camera during a telehealth visit. You’ll see an online doctor or other member of your care team during video visits with your provider.
