Cancer genetic counseling and testing

If you have a family history of cancer, we offer our cancer genetics program, including genetic testing and cancer risk assessments to address any concerns. Specialized pathology testing can identify specific genes related to breast, colon, ovarian and other cancers with a hereditary link. Our board-certified genetic counselors will walk through the results with you, discuss next steps and refer you to a specialist, if needed.

Advanced treatments and therapies

Advocate Trinity uses advanced techniques to treat both malignant and non-malignant tumors, including technology usually not found in community hospitals. Specialities include:

Surgery

Robotic technology: Our Cancer Institute surgeons are trained in some of the most minimally invasive technology available, including the da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System. This highly sophisticated platform allows our surgeons to operate with just a few tiny incisions, plus enhanced vision, precision and control.

Common robotic procedures we perform include hysterectomy to treat endometrial and ovarian cancer, as well as prostatectomy to remove prostate cancer.

GI Lab: In addition to robotic technology, we also have a new state-of-the-art GI Lab with three procedure rooms. This allows for close collaboration with oncologists, gastroenterologists, surgeons and specially trained nurses to provide the best course of treatment for each patient.

Radiation therapy

Advocate Trinity offers some of the most sophisticated radiation therapies available to treat cancers throughout the body, including breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, hematological conditions such as leukemias, lymphomas and multiple myelomas.

Options include image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) and intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) – both which deliver highly powerful and precise radiation to the tumor, while preserving surrounding healthy tissue and minimizing side effects.

We also treat cancer from the inside with high-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy, delivering radiation from small implants (called “seeds”) located close to the tumor.

Excellence in breast health

Advocate Trinity makes it easier than ever to take charge of your breast health:

3D mammography: Also called tomosynthesis, this advanced breast cancer screening tool captures multiple images in less time while giving your doctor a more in-depth view of the breast tissue. It also helps distinguish harmless abnormalities from real tumors – leading to less stress and fewer callbacks.

We also offer digital mammography with computer-aided detection (CAD), which gives our radiologists a second set of eyes to find and assess abnormal areas.

Mammotome Breast Biopsy System: This cutting-edge, handheld biopsy device is used in conjunction with ultrasound. The Mammotome requires a single, tiny incision and obtains better samples during biopsy, enabling more accurate results and earlier diagnosis of breast cancer. We also offer advanced breast MRI imaging as supplemental tool for diagnosis and staging breast cancer.

Breast reconstruction: Our plastic and reconstructive surgeons are board-certified and bring years of experience to provide mastectomy patients a full range of options for surgical reconstruction. From minimal operations involving implants to maximal surgeries using TRAM flaps, abdominal flaps or perforator-based free flaps, we strive to help each woman make the right choice for her specific needs.

Breast health navigator: We understand that a breast concern can be a time of uncertainty and anxiety. At Advocate Trinity, our certified breast health navigators help ease any extra burden on you by helping coordinate all care, connecting you to valuable resources and providing emotional support every step of the way.
